Are vaccines safe?

Vaccines are tested thoroughly and considered safe.

But vaccines, like any medicine, have some risks. Vaccine side effects are usually mild. About one time out of 100,000, they can cause a severe reaction (like an allergic reaction with hives or trouble breathing).

Everything carries risks. We take risks every day, like driving cars, because the risks are small and the benefits are large.

What are the side effects of vaccines?

Vaccine side effects are usually mild. Your child might be sore at the site of the shot. He or she might have a mild fever. More serious side effects are very uncommon, but they can happen. If you’re concerned about your child’s symptoms after a vaccination, call your doctor right away.

Is it safe for my child to get so many vaccines at once?

Yes. Parents sometimes worry that their children are getting too many shots at once. They’re afraid that the shots could be too much for their child’s immune system. But that’s not the case. Experts believe that babies’ immune systems can easily handle several vaccinations at once.
