You apply topical treatment to the affected area of the skin. Topical drugs are often used to treat infections of small areas of skin.
Topical treatments come in many different forms. These include:
- Ointments are best when the skin needs moisture. Theyre usually better than creams at delivering active ingredients into the skin. Ointments are the most common type of topical treatment available.
- Creams are easy to apply and disappear when theyre rubbed into the skin.
- Lotions contain more water than creams. They can help keep skin cool or dry.
- Gels arent absorbed into the skin as well as treatments that have oil like ointments.
- Powders help protect areas where skin rubs against skin (for instance, between the toes or buttocks, in the armpits or groin, or under the breasts).
Some topical treatments are available without a prescription, or your doctor may prescribe a stronger treatment.
