The best way to prevent skin infections is simple. Wash your hands. Minor cuts and scrapes often dont require a visit to the doctor. You can treat them yourself. To help prevent infection:
- Wash the injured area with soap and water. Hold the wound under cool, running water, or fill a sink with cool water and use a cup to pour over the wound.
- Clean the skin around the wound with soap and a soft cloth. Try to keep soap out of the wound to avoid irritation.
- Apply an ointment or cream that fights bacteria. It wont speed the healing, but it may help prevent infection and reduce scars.
- Cover with a sterile bandage. A bandage can help keep the wound clean and keep bacteria out.
- Try not to touch other peoples cuts or sores and any materials that have come in contact with them.
- Dont share personal items, such as soap, towels, and razors.
- Clean and wash sports clothing and equipment after each use.
Dealing with itchy skin
Scratching itchy skin can lead to infection. These tips can help you avoid skin itch and dryness:
- Use creams and lotions that moisturize your skin.
- Use mild bath soap and laundry detergent that wont irritate your skin.
- If you take baths, use warm (not hot) water to avoid making your skin too dry.
- Avoid fabrics, like wool, that can make skin itch.
- Warm, dry air can make your skin dry, so keep your home cool and use a humidifier to add moisture to the air.
- Place a cool washcloth or some ice over the itchy area, rather than scratching.
Keep skin dry
Skin that is kept clean and dry is your best defense against
skin fungal infections. These suggestions may also help:
- Go barefoot. Take off your shoes and expose your feet to the air when you can.
- Instead of walking barefoot in public areas, wear “flip-flops” or sandals.
- Change socks and underwear daily.
- Keep feet dry. After using a locker room or public shower, dry your feet carefully. Pay special attention to the areas between your toes.
- Replace old exercise shoes and dont borrow other peoples shoes.
