  • Cut out caffeine. Coffee, tea, some sodas, and chocolate have caffeine. Some people say that caffeine makes their symptoms worse. Caffeine can also make it hard to sleep.

  • Cut down on alcohol. Alcohol may make symptoms worse. Drink just a little or not at all.

  • Stop smoking. It may make the symptoms of Restless Legs Syndrome worse.

  • Watch your medicines. Restless Legs Syndrome may be made worse by some medicines for:
    • Colds and allergies
    • Depression
    • High blood pressure
    • Some heart conditions
    • Nausea

Never stop taking your medicines without talking with your doctor.

Tell your doctor about all the medicines that you take. This includes non-prescription drugs and alternative medicines (herbs). Also mention any vitamins or supplements that you use. If a medicine is the problem, your doctor may change your dose or try a new one. Don’t stop taking a medicine without your doctor’s okay.

  • Eat healthier. A healthy diet is good for everyone. Try a low-fat diet high in fruits, grains, and vegetables.
