There are many ways to help you cope with the symptoms of Restless Legs Syndrome. But everyone is different. It may take time to find out what works for you.

Here are some ideas:

  • Exercise. If you have Restless Legs Syndrome, staying active is important. Regular exercise may help control your symptoms. Pick an activity that you enjoy. Walk around the block with a friend. But, before starting a new exercise plan, check with your doctor.

    Many experts warn not to exercise too hard in the evening. It may make it hard to sleep. But many people with Restless Legs Syndrome find that a little physical activity right before bed can help them sleep. See if this works for you.


  • Stretching. Some people with Restless Legs Syndrome say that stretching relieves their symptoms. Some stretching before bed may really help. Try some leg stretches to see if they work for you.


  • Massage. Some people think that massaging their legs helps. If you’re in a chair, take breaks to rub your legs. Some people use electric massagers to do the work.


  • Heat. A hot bath helps some people with Restless Legs Syndrome. You may also get relief with electric heating pads.


  • Cold. Some people find that cold baths or ice packs ease symptoms.


  • Find ways to relax. Living with Restless Legs Syndrome is stressful. So, take time every day to relax. Lying on the couch and watching TV doesn’t count! Learn about relaxation activities. Try meditation. Take a yoga class. Ask your doctor about biofeedback. (This is a way to control your body’s reaction to stress.) Find what works for you.
