Getting help for your symptoms is the first step to feeling better. See your primary care doctor. Or, you can see a specialist, like a sleep medicine doctor or a neurologist.

Many people don’t know much about Restless Legs Syndrome. Even some doctors may miss the signs. Adults with Restless Legs Syndrome have been told that they have:

  • Sleep problems
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Varicose veins
  • Back problems
  • Muscle pains

Some parents have been told that their children have “growing pains.”

Be prepared

Go to your doctor with information about your symptoms. Before your next appointment:

  • Keep a Symptom Diary (PDF Format) and a Sleep Diary (PDF Format) for one week.

  • Write down all the medicines you take and how much of each.

  • See if you have symptoms of Restless Legs Syndrome.

  • Ask family members if they’ve ever had these symptoms.

The symptoms of Restless Legs Syndrome may be hard to explain. Think about ways you can talk about them with your doctor before you meet. If you don’t, you may forget some details when you’re in the office.

During your appointment, ask your doctor:

  • Do you think Restless Legs Syndrome is causing my symptoms?
  • Could another health problem cause them?
  • Could I have Restless Legs Syndrome, even if the symptoms come and go?
