With Restless Legs Syndrome, you may find that some days are better than others. Try to find ways to help yourself on bad days. Learn how to manage your symptoms. And learn how to avoid them when you can.
Here are some tips:
- Plan ahead. Dont let symptoms surprise you. Think about where you may have trouble. For instance, get an aisle seat at the movies, so you can get up easily. The same goes for seats on buses, trains, and planes. Plan “pit stops” for road trips, so you wont have to sit so long.
- Stand up. Many people find that they have fewer symptoms when they stand up and move around. Try doing more of your normal activities that way. Raise your desk, so you can get out of the chair and work on your feet.
- Dont fight it. Resisting the urge to move around probably wont help. It may even make your symptoms worse. So, give in. If you stretch your legs, you may focus less on your symptoms.
- Keep a Sleep Diary (PDF Format) and a Symptom Diary (PDF Format). Its a good idea to track your symptoms and sleep habits. These diaries can help you and your doctor see how youre doing. It may also point out habits that make your symptoms worse.
- Keep your mind busy. Some people have fewer symptoms if they distract themselves. When you have to sit down, keep your mind active. Read a good book. Do a crossword puzzle or needlework. Play cards. Do anything that interests you and lets you focus on something besides your symptoms.
- Help others and yourself. Find a local support group for people living with Restless Legs Syndrome. You can meet other people who are going through the same things as you are. You may also learn new tips on how to deal with your condition.
