Restless Legs Syndrome symptoms can make it hard to sleep. Good sleep habits may help you cope. Here are some tips:

  • Keep your bedroom cool and quiet.
  • Go to bed at the same time each night.
  • Get up at the same time each day.
  • Set aside enough hours for sleep each night.
  • Get regular physical activity.

Heavy exercise before you go to sleep may not be a good idea. But a little exercise right before bed may make it easier to sleep. See what helps you.

Once you go to bed

  • Don’t force yourself to sleep. If you’re lying awake in bed, get up. Do something else for a while. Only go back to bed when you’re sleepy.

  • Find a soothing routine while trying to fall asleep. Before you go to bed, read something or listen to soothing music. But, once you’re sleepy and in bed, don’t read or watch TV.

Check with your doctor if you are taking sleeping pills for more than a few weeks.

Symptoms of Restless Legs Syndrome tend to follow a pattern. They often occur in the evening and at night, and get better in the morning. Some people sleep better when they go to bed later and wake up later.

A Sleep Diary (PDF Format) can help you see how you’re doing. Fill it out for a week or two. Then take the results to your doctor.
