Restless Legs Syndrome can change the lives of people who have it. It can also affect their families, friends, and co-workers.

If you have a friend or loved one with the condition, you know that already. You may have dealt with the symptoms for years. Living with someone with Restless Legs Syndrome can be frustrating.

You may get annoyed at times: For instance, when your partner keeps you up at night with his or her kicking, or can’t sit still at dinner like other people.

Some days, your loved one may be hard to deal with. Being tired robs people of the energy to do things that they enjoy. It can leave them grouchy or nervous.

It’s natural to feel frustrated. But keep in mind that Restless Legs Syndrome is a real condition. It’s as real as diabetes, high blood pressure, or asthma. It isn’t your loved one’s fault.

Helping your friend or loved one

Here are some ways to help:

  • Learn about the condition. Find out about Restless Legs Syndrome and its causes. Read up on how to treat it.


  • Be flexible. There may be things that your loved one is afraid to do. People with Restless Legs Syndrome may worry about going to the movies or taking a long flight. Respect that his or her discomfort is real. But don’t give up. Look for other ways to be together. Break up trips into smaller parts. Get aisle seats at the movies, or have movie nights at home, so your loved one can stand up or stretch during the show.


  • Join a support group. This can be a great way to meet others coping with Restless Legs Syndrome. You can all share tips and learn more about the condition.


  • Make sure your loved one sees a doctor. Regular healthcare is good for everyone. Make sure that your loved one gets the treatment that he or she needs.
