Restless Legs Syndrome is a medical condition. Its not “all in your head.”
Experts dont always know why someone gets Restless Legs Syndrome. It can run in families. If you have it, theres a chance that a relative does, too.
However, there are some known causes. It may be caused by:
- Certain brain chemicals that are out of balance
- Low iron levels
- Other health conditions
You can have Restless Legs Syndrome at any age. In general, the symptoms tend to start at middle age or older. But some people get it as children. In kids, it may be mistakenly called “growing pains” or being too active.
Health conditions and medicines
Some health conditions, like kidney failure, can cause Restless Legs Syndrome. If the condition is treated successfully, the symptoms of Restless Legs Syndrome may go away.
Some pregnant women get Restless Legs Syndrome. But, after delivery, the symptoms often stop.
Medicines can also play a role. Symptoms of Restless Legs Syndrome may be made worse by medicines for:
- Colds and allergies
- Depression
- High blood pressure
- Heart conditions
- Nausea
Never stop taking your medicines without first talking with your doctor.
