Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is an enlargement of the prostate gland in men. As men age, the prostate gland slowly grows bigger, or enlarges (hyperplasia). Benign means the enlargement isn't caused by cancer or infection.
The prostate gland lies just below the bladder (where urine is stored). It surrounds the urethra, the tube that carries urine and semen out of the body through the penis.
Half of all men over age 50 have BPHand most will have it by the time they're 80 years of age!
