Many men with an enlarged prostate don’t have any signs or symptoms. But, if you have an enlarged prostate, you may:

  • Have a weak urine stream that may start and stop.

  • Urinate more often.

  • Get out of bed a few times at night to urinate.

  • Have trouble starting to urinate.

  • Only urinate a little bit each time you go to the bathroom.

  • Leak or dribble urine after going to the bathroom.

  • Feel like you still have to urinate, even after you’ve gone to the bathroom.

  • Feel a strong, sudden urge to urinate.

  • See a little blood in your urine.

These symptoms can also be signs of more serious problems. Don’t ignore them. See your doctor. Men over age 50 should have prostate exams every year, whether they have symptoms or not.

Other conditions

An enlarged prostate can cause other problems. Sometimes, it can cause urinary tract infections. In rare cases, it can cause more serious problems like kidney damage.

Write down your symptoms

If you think you may have an enlarged prostate, keep track of your symptoms. Fill out the Symptom Diary (PDF Format) to see how often your symptoms really bother you. Then take the Prostate Health Assessment to find out if your symptoms suggest you have an enlarged prostate.

Talk with your doctor about your Symptom Diary and the results of the Prostate Health Assessment.
