Here are a few tips that may help you cope with your enlarged prostate symptoms:

  • See your doctor often. Some men feel embarrassed and want to deal with their symptoms on their own. But remember, enlarged prostates are common. More than half of all men have an enlarged prostate by age 50. There’s no reason just to live with symptoms. Your doctor can help.

  • Take any medicine your doctor prescribes for an enlarged prostate. Use a weekly pillbox to help you remember.

  • Don’t treat yourself on your own. A lot of men try herbal supplements or alternative medicine for their symptoms. Saw palmetto is one common treatment, although it has not been reviewed by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Check with your doctor first. Don’t assume that supplements will help or that they’re safe, even if you’ve read about them in a book or on a Web site.

  • Be careful using other medicines. Some non-prescription medicines for colds or allergies can cause problems for men with an enlarged prostate. They can raise the risk of acute urinary retention, a blocked bladder that needs emergency care.
