If you have an enlarged prostate that doesn’t bother you much, your doctor may suggest “watchful waiting.”

This is a common approach for men with mild symptoms. You don’t ignore the problem. Rather, you and your doctor will keep an eye on it. You will still need regular check-ups.

Both you and your doctor should decide whether watchful waiting is right for you. You shouldn’t do it on your own.

Why choose watchful waiting?

Your doctor may want you to make some lifestyle changes to control symptoms. Some examples are:

  • Avoiding some medicines that can make your symptoms worse, like non-prescription cold and allergy remedies.

  • Cutting back on caffeine and alcohol.

If your symptoms change or get worse, go back to your doctor. He or she may order a PSA test to track your condition. Your doctor may also suggest medicines to treat your condition.

An enlarged prostate usually keeps growing. Often the symptoms get worse over time. But this doesn’t always happen.
