Lifestyle changes can’t keep your prostate from growing. Aging is the biggest risk factor. Most men have an enlarged prostate by the time they’re age 80.

Some doctors think genes play a role. Men who have close relatives with an enlarged prostate are more likely to have it. Obesity and cigarette smoking may also raise your risk.

Many men never have symptoms, so they don’t need treatment. But, if you have symptoms that bother you, like going to the bathroom often, you don’t just have to live with them. There are things you can do to help relieve them.

What causes an enlarged prostate?

Experts are still learning what causes an enlarged prostate. But they think that certain hormones are involved.

The focus has been on one male hormone involved in the growth of male sex organs. This hormone makes the prostate grow to its adult size. Later in life, this hormone may cause the prostate to keep growing. Other hormones may also affect the prostate’s growth later in life.
