Osteoarthritis may affect how well you get around. But there are many devices that can help you with daily tasks.

You can buy many helpful items at kitchen, furniture, or household stores. Some healthcare organizations have information on where to buy arthritis-friendly devices. You can also talk with your doctor or physical therapist.

If you have knee or hip osteoarthritis:

  • Powered reclining chairs can ease you in and out without much effort.

  • Walkers and canes help you move from room to room and up and down stairs. If your movements are very limited, you may need a wheelchair or scooter.

  • Hand controls for your car’s gas pedal and brake can make driving easier. Your mechanic can install these.

  • Safety frames and raised toilet seats make using the toilet easier on your joints.

  • Grab bars for the bath and shower lend support for getting in and out.

  • A shower bench lets you sit while showering. This takes the stress off your legs.

  • Sock and stocking aids let you pull on hosiery without bending your knees. Long-handled shoehorns help you put on your shoes without bending.

If you have hand or wrist osteoarthritis:

  • Grippers make light switches easier to grasp. Covers can help you turn doorknobs.

  • A buttonhook can help in getting dressed. Zipper loops let you hold onto something wider than the original pull.

  • Use Velcro® or elastic shoelaces if you have trouble tying your shoes.

  • Electric toothbrushes and toothpaste dispensers make dental care simpler.

  • Try long-handled scrub brushes for hard-to-reach spots. Use wash mitts with a pocket to hold your soap.

  • Automatic can openers and jar-and-bottle openers give you access to all your ingredients.

  • Electric knives make carving easier.

  • Utensils with large, soft handles make gripping more comfortable.

  • No-slide pads keep your dishes and mixing bowls from moving.

  • Pot lifters can help you get things on and off the stove, or in and out of the oven.
