Unless you’re retired, you likely spend most of your waking hours at work. But that doesn’t mean you have to work in pain.

If you have osteoarthritis, talk with your employer about it. Perhaps your job has changed and you can’t work as comfortably as before. Maybe you need furniture and computer equipment that are easier to use.

You may want to think about a job that’s easier on your joints. Of course, many of us don’t have this luxury. It often depends on factors we can’t control. But many people with osteoarthritis find career changes both physically and professionally rewarding.

Working in comfort

Whether you stay in your job or seek a new one, here are a few ideas to make life easier in the workspace:

  • Don’t sit too long. It’s never a good idea to sit all day. It’s even worse if you have osteoarthritis of the knees and hips. Take breaks often (every half hour is ideal) to stand, move around, and stretch.

  • Dress right. Wear comfortable shoes to work. Women should note high heels put more stress on your feet than flatter shoes. They also may harm knee joints.

  • Get helpful gadgets. Many devices can make your job less stressful on your joints. Headsets are a must for people who spend lots of time on the phone. Document holders at eye level make typing easier on your neck. If you spend time on a computer, get a wristrest. You should also look into keyboards, mice, and other equipment that’s specially designed for comfort. Of course, a good chair with armrests is important, too.
