Obesity is complex. Many types of healthcare professionals can help you manage it.
Your primary care doctor should be the first professional you see. But, during your weight-loss program, you may meet several specialists. They may work with your doctor as a team. Or, your doctor may send you to one or more of them, including:
- Dietitians and nutritionists
- Exercise physiologists
- Therapists
- Specialized doctors
Dietitians or nutritionists can help you with food choices and nutrition. They can advise you on how to eat healthfully.
A registered dietitian (RD) has met certain academic and professional standards. Some RDs also call themselves nutritionists.
Exercise physiologists focus on exercise and fitness. They may:
- Give you tests to see your physical condition.
- Plan workouts that meet your needs.
Therapists can help you change behaviors that keep you from losing weight. They can also treat:
- Binge-eating disorders
- Emotional eating problems
Certain types of doctors and surgeons specialize in treating people who are overweight and obese. They can:
- Help you with diet and exercise programs.
- Prescribe weight-loss medicines.
- Do weight-loss surgery on people who are severely obese.
