Being overweight or obese needs lifelong treatment. If you see your doctor about weight problems, he or she will want to know if you really want to lose weight. You need to be willing to make changes, so that the treatment will work.

He or she will also take into account:

  • Why you want to lose weight

  • Your success with trying to lose weight before

  • Your support network

  • Your attitude toward physical activity

  • Your understanding of the risks and benefits

Talk with your doctor about your weight-loss goals. Your pace should be slow, but steady. Aim to lose one to two pounds a week.

Your weight-loss program will likely include a balanced, reduced-calorie diet. It may also be low in fat. But managing obesity long term means more than watching what you eat.

Your doctor will also ask you to get regular physical activity. He or she also may ask you to keep a food and activity log and go over it with you.
