Losing weight is only half of the battle. To win the war against obesity, you have to keep those pounds off over time.

Along the way, you’ll run into challenges. When you do:

  • Forgive yourself.

  • Know that setbacks happen.

  • Don’t let slip-ups take you off track.

Set goals that work

Don’t just focus on how many pounds you want to lose. Think about making changes in your diet and physical activity habits. Some tips are:

  • Adopt diet and exercise habits that suit your likes and dislikes.

  • Don’t deprive yourself. Keep your goals realistic.

  • Learn to reward yourself (with things other than food) for staying on track.

For example, instead of a goal to “exercise more” or “walk 30 minutes every day,” set a goal to “walk 30 minutes, five days a week.” Reaching these small, short-term goals will help you keep on track.

Get support

It’s also important to have plenty of support from family, friends, and co-workers. Don’t try to go it alone.

Finally, be sure to work with a doctor or another healthcare provider. When you have an expert you trust on your side, he or she will:

  • Help you steer clear of setbacks.

  • Make it less likely that you’ll run into health problems.
