A solid support network is key to losing weight and keeping it off. You may need different kinds of support from different people. Sometimes, you may want a shoulder to lean on. Other times, you may need someone to push you to stick with it.
Here are some of the people you can turn to for support:
Family and friends
Ask your family and friends to help in your weight-loss efforts. Chances are some of them have struggled with weight, too.
One of them may be willing to be your diet/physical activity “buddy.” Together you can:
- Eat healthy meals.
- Take walks or go to the gym.
- Support each other.
Healthcare providers
If you are very overweight or have health problems, make sure you work closely with one or more healthcare professionals. Some sources of support include:
- Doctors
- Nurses
- Dietitians
- Nutritionists
- Therapists
- Exercise physiologists/personal trainers
Take the food out of relationships
Some well-meaning people may weaken your weight-loss efforts. Think of the doting relative whos always urging you to eat a little more. Or, the fast-food-eating friend who tempts you to overeat.
Try to take food out of these relationships:
- Tell your well-meaning relative(s) how losing weight will help your health.
- Meet your friend someplace where there is no food.
- Find an activity you both enjoy and that doesnt involve eating.
