Losing weight isn’t something you do meal by meal. It’s something you do for life. So, give yourself a break if you slip up every now and again.

Learn from your mistakes

When you slip up, don’t beat yourself up. Instead, step back and think about why you had the setback. And, figure out how you can keep the problem from happening again.

It may help to write down specific strategies. For example:

  • If you tend to eat in front of the TV: Don’t sit there!

  • If seeing snack food tempts you to eat it: Don’t keep any in the house.

  • If treats in the office tempt you: Stay away from the break room or bring your own healthy snacks.

Keep a Food and Activity Diary. It can help you spot your possible trouble spots.

Get support

If you’re struggling to keep on track, it may help to talk about it. Keep the phone number of a trusted friend on hand. Call when you feel yourself slipping.

Support groups and online message boards also can be good sources of support.
