If someone close to you has migraines, there are ways you can help:

  • Learn about migraines: Their causes, symptoms, and treatments. Let your loved one explain how it feels. Read some books on the subject. Get information from healthcare professionals. Visit Web sites of headache organizations. Once you understand the condition, you’ll know better what your loved one is going through. You’ll also know what you can do to help.

  • Support your loved one. People with migraines sometimes avoid talking about their headaches. They may be afraid that people won’t understand. If you’ve never had a migraine yourself, you may not be able to imagine what it feels like. But you can let your loved one know that you care.

  • Watch for migraine triggers and warning signs. Pay attention to what’s going on before your loved one’s attacks. Look out for signs that your loved one may not notice.

  • Encourage your loved one to follow the treatment plan. Learn about each drug’s doses and side effects. Keep track of medicines and doses. Help your loved one avoid migraine triggers and stick with a set schedule of eating and sleeping. Suggest stress-relieving activities, like a walk, an exercise class, or a vacation.

  • Connect with others. A support group can help relieve stress, build a sense of community, encourage you, and give you information.
