There are many types of headaches. Migraine is one kind.

Migraine can vary in how often you have them, how bad they are, and how long they last. Headache pain is the main migraine symptom. But, there are many other symptoms, too.

Without effective treatment, they can:

  • Cause you to miss work or school, or get less done

  • Affect your time with friends or family

  • Cause you to cut back on daily activities and social events

What causes migraines

Experts don’t know what causes migraines. But they think migraine pain is linked to changes in chemicals in the brain that cause blood vessels on the surface of the brain to swell. This causes the throbbing migraine pain and may cause other symptoms.

Family history seems to play a role in who gets migraines. If you have migraines, there’s a chance one or both of your parents did, too.

Who gets migraines?

Migraines are common in the US. There is a migraine sufferer in almost one out of every four homes. Migraines are most common in people ages 25 to 50.

Girls and boys have an equal chance of getting migraines. But, after puberty, women are more likely than men to get migraines.

Hormones may play a role for many women who have migraines. Some women get migraines at or about the start of their menstrual cycle. Women who have migraines often have fewer migraines while they’re pregnant. Migraine patterns can change when women use birth control pills and during menopause.
