Animation text:

Scientists aren’t sure of the exact cause of migraines. But many believe them to be an abnormal response of the brain to triggers, such as stress, food additives, or sleep problems. You can inherit a tendency to get migraines.

Changes in the brain and irritated nerves release chemicals during a migraine.

These chemicals inflame and irritate pain nerve endings and cause swelling of the blood vessels on the surface of the brain.

These changes in the blood vessels are felt as the throbbing sensation of migraines.

Other changes inside the brain may create light sensitivity, noise sensitivity, nausea, and other symptoms of migraines.

While there’s no cure, the right treatment can help people reduce the impact migraines have on their life.
