Don’t take frequent or severe head pain lightly. Call your doctor or a headache specialist, if you (or your child) have any of these symptoms:

  • You have two or more headaches a week. You take pain relievers two or more times every week for headache pain.

  • Your headaches are getting worse, or won’t go away, and are affecting your daily activities.

  • Coughing, bending, or intense activity triggers your head pain.

  • Your headache pain has changed recently, such as more often, worse, and/or a different type of pain.

When to seek help right away

Most headaches are harmless. But sometimes a headache may be a symptom of a serious medical problem. Get help right away, if you notice any of these symptoms.

  • A sudden, new, or severe headache

  • Head pain with weakness, dizziness, loss of balance, numbness or tingling, paralysis, speech or vision problems, confusion, seizures, or behavior changes

  • Headache with a fever, stiff neck, shortness of breath, or rash

  • Headache with severe nausea and vomiting

  • Headache that begins after a head injury or other accident
