When you have high blood pressure, its important to know when to call your doctor or emergency medical services.
Call your doctor if you notice any of these signs:
- You have side effects from high blood pressure medicine. These can include feeling drowsy, dizzy or lightheaded, or your heart racing. You may also have problems with sexual side effects. Your doctor may need to change your medicine dose or give you a different medicine.
Call emergency medical services if:
- You have severe headaches, blurred vision, chest pain, or shortness of breath. These may be signs of hypertensive crisis, which is a medical emergency. It can lead to a stroke or heart attack if it isnt treated right away.
- The bottom number in your blood pressure reading rises above 120. This can also be a sign of hypertensive crisis.
Pregnancy and high blood pressure
- If you are pregnant and have high blood pressure, your doctor will want to see you more often than usual. High blood pressure that you get during pregnancy can lead to preeclampsia. This is a serious condition that must be treated. It causes very high blood pressure and may lead to seizures and kidney damage. It can also harm your unborn child. The symptoms may include severe headache, and severe leg, hand, and face swelling.
