These drugs help reduce blood pressure by widening blood vessels.

Benefits

These drugs help lower blood pressure. They also help your heart and blood vessels, in general. They can help protect the kidneys if you have diabetes.

Some things to watch for:

  • Feeling dizzy or lightheaded. You may be at risk for this if you’re also taking a water pill. If it continues, call your doctor.

  • Muscle cramps, weakness, or pain in your back or leg muscles. Trouble sleeping. Also irregular heartbeat, or unusually fast or slow heartbeat. These can be signs of too much potassium in your body. Call your doctor right away.

  • Cough. If this continues or is severe, call your doctor.

  • Swelling of the tongue or face, or skin rash, with or without itching. Don’t try to treat this yourself. Call your doctor right away. If your tongue continues to swell or you feel short of breath, call 911 right away for help.
