Lifestyle changes and medicines are key to controlling high blood pressure. But there are other steps you can take to help. These include:

  • Get enough potassium, calcium, and magnesium in your diet. These minerals are found in many fruits and vegetables. All three help to keep your blood pressure under control. Some blood pressure drugs make your body lose or keep potassium. Be sure you’re getting the right amount. If you need help, see the DASH eating plan. This is a healthy diet plan that helps control blood pressure. It includes foods high in these minerals.


  • Get enough fiber in your diet. Fiber is good for overall heart health.


  • Reduce stress. There is no proof that stress causes high blood pressure. But stress makes it harder to manage. Over time, stress may be bad for the heart and blood vessels. It can also make you more likely to overeat, smoke, and drink too much alcohol.


  • Some people think that eating lots of garlic and onions can help lower blood pressure. This isn’t true, but they are tasty replacements for salt in low-salt dishes.

Alternative Therapies

There are several studies underway to see if acupuncture can help lower blood pressure. There is no proof that acupuncture works to treat high blood pressure. If you do get acupuncture, make sure you work with a licensed practitioner who uses sterile needles.

A number of other herbs, minerals, supplements, and alternative medicines have been promoted as remedies for high blood pressure. Always consult with your doctor before using any alternative treatment. Like any medicine, some herbs, minerals, and other supplements can interact with drugs or foods and produce side effects. Just because something is natural does not mean that it is safe.
