These medicines, known as “water pills,” make your body produce more urine. This helps to get rid of extra fluids and sodium.
Some water pills can make your body lose potassium, an important element in your blood. Your doctor may want you to take a potassium supplement.
Benefits
These medicines can help keep fluid from building up in your body. With less extra fluids, your blood pressure goes down.
Some things to watch for:
- Trips to the bathroom at night. If you have trouble sleeping because you urinate often during the night, ask your doctor if you can take your medicine earlier in the day.
- Weakness or fatigue
- Signs of potassium loss. Muscle cramps or pain (especially in the legs)
- Dry mouth and increased thirst may be signs of dehydration. Nausea or vomiting, being more tired or weak than usual, and weak pulse are signs of severe dehydration. Call your doctor if you experience these signs or symptoms.
- Skin rash. Call your doctor right away.
