Your partner has learned that he or she has genital herpes. This can cause stress in your relationship. But it doesn’t have to end it.

Herpes can be a pretty minor problem. You and your partner may have already been through far worse things together. Keep it in perspective.

Most of all, be supportive. Your partner needs you. Don’t turn your back.

What it means for you

Of course, you have a right to wonder what this means for your own health. You may be asking:

  • Could I have herpes already?

  • Could I have given it to him or her?

  • Can we still have sex?

  • Was my partner unfaithful?

The answer to the first question is yes. You may have been infected. Get tested whether or not you have symptoms.

Even if you don’t have genital herpes, the two of you can still have a sexual relationship. Talk with your doctor about ways to reduce the risk of passing herpes to others.

But there’s always a chance you’ll get infected. You may be willing to accept that. Maybe you’re not. It’s your right, either way. You can also explore ways of being sexually active that pose no risk.

If your partner has herpes, that doesn’t mean that he or she has been unfaithful. He or she could have been infected before you met and not have even known it.

Also, you may have actually given herpes to your partner. You may have had genital herpes for years and not even known it.
