“Most people who have herpes misinterpret the symptoms that they have as being other things.

“I think women, yeast infections—women believe they’re having yeast infections. They buy over-the-counter medication and they treat themselves vaginally. It goes away in five days because herpes goes away in about five days. They’re better and they say, ‘Wow, that yeast medicine worked very well.’

“One of the things that goes on is that the lesions are not specifically in the genital area. These outbreaks can occur anywhere in sort of the boxer shorts’ area, waist to mid-thigh.”
