Some experts think living a healthy lifestyle results in fewer outbreaks.

For overall good health and well-being:

  • Get enough sleep (eight or more hours a night)

  • Eat a healthy diet

  • Don’t smoke or use illegal drugs

  • Limit alcohol

  • Exercise often

The stress connection

There may be a link between constant stress and genital herpes outbreaks. Short-term stress does not seem to trigger outbreaks. The tips above can help you manage stress in the long run.

Being well-rested helps you face daily stresses. A healthy diet gives your body energy for the day. Smoking or using illegal drugs hurts your health. This only adds to stress.

Exercise is a great way to relieve stress. It can also help improve your health. Ask your doctor what kind of exercise might be best for you.

It’s good to take breaks. A few minutes of “time out” every day help a lot. Also plan fun activities with friends and family.
