Here are a few ways to ease the pain of herpes sores and help them heal:

Wear the right clothes

Wear loose pants or dresses that don’t rub you. Cotton underwear is best. Stick with natural fibers, like cotton. They “breathe” better than other fabrics. Don’t wear pantyhose. Or, if you do, buy hose with a cotton crotch.

Keep sores clean and dry

A warm bath keeps the genital area clean. It may also lessen pain. Drying with a towel may be too rough. Use a hair dryer set on “cool” or “air only.”

Try a drying agent dissolved in a “sitz bath.” A sitz bath is a small amount of water in a small tub or pan. Soak just the genital area, not your whole body. You can buy these things at a pharmacy.

Dusting sores with cornstarch can help dry them out, too.

Numb the area

Putting ice packs on the area may help relieve pain. Just seal some ice in a plastic bag and wrap it in a cloth. A pain-relief spray (something that you might spray on a sunburn, for example) may also help.
