If youve just learned you have herpes, you may need emotional support. For some people, thats hard to admit.
Try not to avoid friends or loved ones. Dont cut yourself off from the support you need. Social support is important in helping you manage herpes.
Talk openly
You may find it hard at first to talk about genital herpes with loved ones. You may fear rejection. Experts say the best approach is to think through what you are going to say. Perhaps even practice it. Then, say it in a direct, honest, upbeat way.
Even if your partner supports you, it may help to talk to someone else. If theres someone you trust with personal issues, talk to him or her about it.
You can also talk with a counselor. People seek help from counselors for many reasons. Coping with genital herpes is certainly a good one.
Find new support
Many people find support groups helpful. Your doctor may be able to suggest one. There are also many support groups on the Web. Either way, youre likely to find people dealing with the same issues you are.
Make sure that the support groups have been suggested by a trusted source. And, remember: If anyone tells you anything that seems doubtful, check it out with your doctor.
