If you just found out you have genital herpes, you probably have lots of feelings about it. Try to face your feelings. That makes it easier to find ways to move on with your life. Don’t let the virus control your life. Herpes is something you have. It’s not who you are.

Keep in touch

Don’t avoid friends and relationships because you’re ashamed of having herpes. It hasn’t made you a different person!

People live happy, active lives with all kinds of medical problems. There are medicines to manage herpes symptoms. Also, as time goes on, most people have fewer, milder outbreaks.

You may feel angry with yourself for “letting this happen.” Or, you may feel angry with the person who gave herpes to you. Keep in mind that:

  • Sex is part of life. You can get herpes, no matter how careful you are.

  • Most people with genital herpes don’t know they have it. The person who gave it to you most likely didn’t mean to.

  • If you got it from someone who didn’t tell you that he or she had it, you may feel better by doing all you can not to give herpes to anyone else.

You’re already doing something to feel better about herpes. You’re learning about it. That’s the first step toward taking charge of your feelings and your life.
