When you have heart failure, its important to know how to take care of yourself and when to get help. Create an action plan with your doctor.
Call your doctor if you notice ANY of these symptoms:
- Sudden weight gain (three or more pounds in one day or five pounds in one week)
- More swelling than youre used to in the ankles, legs, and/or belly
- Feeling shorter of breath than youre used to, especially when you lie flat
- Extreme tiredness
- Very fast (100 beats per minute or more) or very slow heartbeat (60 beats per minute or less)
- You feel your heart skip beats
- Chest pain or discomfort when you move and that goes away with rest
- Nausea or lack of hunger
Go to the emergency room (or call 911) right away if:
- You have sudden or severe chest discomfort, or any other major medical problems, including:
- Severe shortness of breath
- Unexplained sweating or weakness
- You feel light-headed, dizzy, or faint
- You have trouble speaking, or your legs or arms go weak.
Talk with your doctor about whats an emergency for you. Plan ahead.
