Weighing yourself is one way to check on how well your heart is working. It’s also one of the most important.

Use the Daily Weight Tracker form (PDF Format) to write down your weight each day. Even a small weight gain over a few days can mean your body is holding water. This means your heart is working harder and your heart failure symptoms will likely get worse.

Get used to weighing yourself every day just like you take your medicines.

Keep track of your weight

  • Weigh yourself at the same time every morning. Wear the same thing (or nothing). Always use the same scale.

  • Weigh yourself after urinating, and before eating or drinking.

  • Write down your weight (PDF Format) each day.

Call your doctor right away if:

  • You gain three or more pounds in one day.

  • You gain five or more pounds in one week.

In either case, you’re probably holding on to too much water.
