Learning that you have heart failure can come as a surprise. You may feel sad, confused, or angry. You may go through a mix of emotions. You may even feel hopeless or fearful about the future.
These feelings are normal. Heart failure is a big change in your life. You will have to make some changes in what you do. As you begin to take charge of your health and your symptoms improve, the feelings should start to fade.
A support group or online community may help you adjust to the news. If you find that you can’t shake the blues, talk with your doctor. He or she can help you and your family get the support you need.
Do yourself a favor
Along with getting support, here are some things you can do for yourself:
- Many people with heart failure worry about having sex. If you can do daily activities easily and feel well, theres probably no reason to avoid sex.
Some heart failure medicines can lower your sex drive. If you are having problems with sex, or are worried about having sex, talk with your doctor.
- Make time for yourself. Tell yourself that you have an illness and need to take care of yourself. If you get tired during the day, take time to rest. Even if its just 20 minutes in an easy chair, a short break can do wonders.
Plan for a few rest periods daily. Good times to nap are right after breakfast and lunch. This lets your heart devote most of its work to digestion.
- Make time to relax. Relaxation exercises can help your body to handle stress. Ask your healthcare provider to suggest a stress-reduction program.
Always talk with your doctor before starting any exercise program, even yoga. Some of the exercises may cause a brief rise in blood pressure. This can strain your heart. Your doctor can help you find an exercise level thats right. He or she may also tell you to avoid certain exercises.
