If you have heart failure, you may take more than one medicine. If you do, it may help to plan a schedule. Your doctor can help you create a medicine schedule. There’s one you can use in the Your Next Appointment form (PDF Format).

Keep copies of the schedule handy. Put them where you’re likely to be when it’s time for your medicine. Give your schedule to family members you spend time with, so they can help you make sure you take your medicine as prescribed.

Some other ways to remember:

  • Make taking your medicine part of your daily routine. Take it when you brush your teeth or watch the news, for example.

  • Set an alarm clock or timer to ring when it’s time to take your medicine.

  • Use a pillbox with sections for different times of the day. Some pillboxes even have an alarm clock.

  • Mark your calendar several days or a week before it’s time to get refills. You don’t want to miss a dose. That’s why planning ahead helps.

Not sure when to take your medicines? Or, if you should take them with food or on an empty stomach? Ask your doctor or pharmacist.

It’s important to know:

  • What you’re taking

  • Why you’re taking it

  • How you should take it

When in doubt, ask!
