Pills and injections aren’t the only ways to treat erection difficulties. Other methods include:

Counseling

This involves talking with a psychiatrist, psychologist, sex therapist, or other counselor about things that can affect your ability to get or keep an erection.

Vacuum devices

This treatment uses a tube placed over the penis. You pump air out of the tube. The suction creates an erection when blood enters the penis. You place a ring around the base of the penis to keep the erection. When you take off the ring, the erection goes down.

These devices are generally safe and work well. But don’t use one for more than 30 minutes at a time.

Some men also may find it hard or uncomfortable to ejaculate after using one of these devices. Side effects may include:

  • Numbness or coldness of the penis

  • Bruising on the skin of the penis

Surgery

If other treatments don’t work, your surgeon can place tubes inside the penis. The tubes, which are either partly rigid or inflatable, can produce an erection.

There is a risk of infection. Your surgeon will discuss other risks related to this procedure.

Alternative treatments

A number of herbs, minerals, supplements, and alternative medicines have been promoted as remedies for erection difficulties. Always talk with your doctor before using any alternative treatment. Like any medicine, some herbs, minerals, and other supplements can interact with drugs or food and produce side effects. Just because something is natural does not mean it’s safe.
