Some lifestyle factors can affect erectile function. These include:

  • Smoking. Smoking can cause blood-flow problems that keep you from getting and keeping an erection. If you smoke, talk with your doctor about ways to quit.

  • Too much alcohol. Drinking too much, at one sitting or over time, can affect your erection quality.

  • Illegal drugs. Drugs, like heroin and cocaine, hurt your ability to get and keep erections.

  • Eating habits. A high-fat diet can clog arteries and harm blood flow. This can cause erection difficulties. If you have high cholesterol, your erection quality may be at risk. Not all cholesterol is bad. Raising your levels of “good” (HDL) cholesterol and lowering your levels of “bad” (LDL) cholesterol can cut your chances of erection difficulties.

See your doctor if you have any questions about health, symptoms, or medicines.
