Lots of men have a change in erectile function at times. More than half of all men age 40 and older may have some kind of erection difficulty regularly. But even some younger men have trouble getting or keeping an erection.

What is erectile dysfunction (ED)?

Erectile dysfunction is difficulty getting and keeping an erection firm enough for satisfactory sex.

There are degrees of erectile dysfunction. The symptoms can vary. Some men may find that:

  • Their erections are not as hard as they used to be.

  • It takes longer to get an erection.

  • They can’t keep an erection long enough to complete sex.

  • They can’t get an erection.

Common and treatable

Getting and keeping an erection is about more than sex. Other health conditions can cause erection difficulties. Sometimes, medicines can cause them.
