Animation text:

When a man is sexually aroused, his brain and nerve cells respond by sending signals that cause muscles in the penis to relax.

As the muscles relax, chambers that run the length of the penis fill with blood causing it to expand and become erect.

The chambers press against their surrounding membranes putting pressure on the veins that carry blood out of the penis. This “traps” blood inside the chambers and allows the penis to stay erect.

But sometimes, something prevents the erection from occurring or impairs its quality.

Usually this is caused by a condition that affects blood flow, like diabetes or high blood pressure. Without enough blood to the chambers, the penis can’t stay erect.
