Support from friends and family can be a huge help for people with type 2 diabetes. Here are some ways you can give support:

  • Learn about diabetes. The more you know, the better you can help.

  • Gently help your loved one to make healthy changes. Be a workout partner, eat the same diet, and urge him or her to do regular blood sugar checks. Try not to nag or blame if your loved one gets off track.

  • Know what your loved one’s diabetes plan involves, including the medicine schedule, if there is one.

  • Know the signs of a health emergency and what to do if one happens.

  • Try not to give advice that isn’t asked for, or try to force your loved one to make a decision. Don’t try to force your own values on the person you’re trying to help.

  • Know that your loved one may get frustrated at times. Listen to his or her concerns. Simple support and kind words may be the best help you can give.

  • Find support for your loved one and yourself through diabetes support groups. Your loved one’s doctor may be able to suggest one that meets in your community. Many online diabetes support groups welcome caregivers as well.
