Counseling, or “talk therapy,” is a good way to treat depression. Talking with an expert about your illness can help resolve it. While you won’t get results right away, you may find that just saying what you feel may bring you some relief.

Short-term counseling has become more common and may occur over a period of 10 to 20 weeks.

Types of counseling

Types of counseling used to treat depression include:

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy can help you spot ways of thinking and acting, like being negative, that add to depression. It can then help you change those patterns. This counseling is usually short term. It is often very helpful for depression alone or with medicine.

  • Interpersonal therapy looks at how depression can be linked to troubled emotional relationships. Like cognitive behavioral therapy, interpersonal therapy tends to be short term and works well with depression.

  • Psychodynamic therapy helps you look at painful life events and conflicts that happened earlier in your life, especially during childhood. It can be used short term, although it is often a longer process.

  • Group counseling allows you and other people with depression (or people with the same issues that led to your depression) to meet together with a counselor and share experiences.
