Bipolar disorder can be hard to spot. To diagnose it, a doctor needs to know all of the extended periods of “ups” and “downs” you’ve had in your life.

He or she may also want to know about “calm” periods you had between the highs and lows, when you functioned normally; for instance, how long they lasted.
