We know a lot more about bipolar disorder than we used to.
People have seen the signs of bipolar disorder for thousands of years. But no one really knew what bipolar disorder was. It wasnt until the 19th century that therapists realized that episodes of depression and mania in the same person were due to a single illness. Even then, two of the best prescriptions were bed rest and warm baths.
Luckily, things got better in the 20th century. By the early 1900s, doctors had more information for studying the disease. They knew the role of social factors. And, they knew that stress could bring on an episode in some people. But, until the 1950s, there was no medicine to treat bipolar disorder well.
Today, there are many medicines used to manage bipolar disorder. Most people with bipolar disorder hold jobs, raise families, and live full lives.
Who gets bipolar disorder?
People with bipolar disorder may feel alone or different. They may feel less able than others. But many important, successful people have or have had bipolar disorder. In fact, some experts see a special link between bipolar disorder and being creative.
Medicine may let you keep your creative side while controlling your mood swings. In fact, untreated bipolar disorder can prevent people from doing what they want.
