An asthma inhaler helps send medicine into your airways. There are many kinds of inhalers. Your doctor will help you find the kind that works best for you. Follow the instructions that come with your inhaler.

This is how to use an inhaler:

Get ready

  • Remove the cap. Hold the inhaler upright.

  • Shake the inhaler. Tilt your head back a little.

Step 1

Hold the inhaler in your mouth. If you have trouble using the inhaler alone, add a spacer.

Step 2

Spray a puff

  • Breathe out as far as you can.

  • Start to breathe in slowly. At the same time, push down once on the top of the inhaler. Keep breathing in slowly.

  • Hold your breath for 10 seconds. Then breathe out.

  • Wait one minute between puffs.

  • Repeat all steps as directed.

IMPORTANT: If you use more than one inhaler, ask your doctor what order to use them in.
