Your doctor may suggest using a nebulizer for your asthma medicine. A nebulizer is a good option, if you have trouble using an inhaler. Ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist to show you how to use it.

Here’s how to use a nebulizer:

Step 1

  • If your medicine is already mixed and measured, then open it and place it into the cup.

  • If your medicine is NOT mixed, then measure the dose of medicine and extra solution. Follow your doctor’s directions. Put the mixture into the cup.

Step 2

Connect the tube to the cup.

Step 3—Sit up straight

Place the mouthpiece in your mouth. Or, if you are using a face mask, put it over your nose and mouth. Make sure the mask seals well around your nose and mouth.

Step 4—Turn on the nebulizer

Breathe in deeply and slowly.

Step 5

Clean the nebulizer cup with warm water after each use. Let it air dry. At the end of each day, clean the mask, cup, and mouthpiece. Use warm, soapy water. Follow the directions for cleaning and storing that came with your nebulizer.

Talk with your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist, if you have questions about how to use a nebulizer.
